Great poster from 826 Valencia, a non-profit writing workshop for young people in San Francisco which is disguised as a Pirate Supply Store. There’s a great story behind this - the organisation’s founders discovered an empty shop unit on Valencia, but the city ordinances stated that any businesses in that area of the city must be either retail or catering, so the Pirate Supply Store was developed as the “legitimate” business front for the writing center. It’s also proved to be a brilliant way to attract interest in the organisation and a great expression of their creative intent.
The workshop’s founding body 826 National, has since branched out to New York, where they set up a Super Hero Supply Store, and five more US cities, with storefronts including Robot Supplies and a Space Travel Company. I’d love to see this kind of creativity in the not for profit / education sectors in the UK.
